MPS: Powerful Battery Management with Precise Monitoring

Robust Battery Management IC

The MP3714 from MPS is a robust battery management IC that provides comprehensive analog front-end (AFE) monitoring and a reliable protection solution. It supports communication via I2C or a serial peripheral interface (SPI) and is designed for 3-cell to 16-cell series battery packs. Additionally, certain pins can handle absolute voltages exceeding 80V.

Dual ADC Architecture for Precise Monitoring

The MP3714 features two separate analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The first ADC measures the differential cell voltages of each channel (up to 16 channels), the chip temperature, and the temperatures of up to seven external NTC thermistors. The second ADC monitors the charge and discharge current via an external shunt resistor. The dual ADC architecture enables synchronous voltage and current measurements, allowing for precise monitoring of cell and pack impedance.

Accurate SoC Determination and MOSFET Integration

When paired with an MPF4279x fuel gauge, the MP3714 can determine the state of charge (SoC) with an accuracy of up to 2%. For efficient charge and discharge control, the MP3714 integrates a high-side MOSFET driver (H-SFET). The discharge MOSFET driver (DSG) includes a configurable current soft-start (SS), enabling controlled turn-on and eliminating the need for an external pre-charge circuit. Additionally, the MOSFET drivers offer extensive protection features, including overcurrent protection (OCP), short-circuit protection (SCP), battery undervoltage protection (UVP), battery overvoltage protection (OVP), and high/low temperature protection – all with configurable thresholds.

Integrated Fuse Release and Self-Diagnostic Protection

Furthermore, the MP3714 includes an integrated fuse-triggering mechanism for protection against severe undervoltage (SUVP), severe overvoltage (SOVP), and MOSFET failures. A comprehensive self-diagnostic protection system ensures high operational reliability. For cell balancing, internal passive balancing MOSFETs support balancing currents of up to 58mA. Alternatively, external balancing transistors (MOSFET or BJT) can be controlled for greater flexibility. The MP3714 is available in a TQFP-48 (7x7mm) package.
